To build a dynamic and effective team, wineries need to look outside the local talent pool—it’s tapped out. But where should they look? Averiel McKenzie, director of diversity recruiting at Gallo and executive director of The Veraison Project, will share his tips in casting a wide and successful recruitment net, including the best non-wine and non-ag-centric colleges, alternative regions and industries to source from, as well as methods to make the recruiting process more open to attract a broader set. He’ll also provide insight on the realities of internships: Are they really the right fit for your recruitment needs and what makes them effective?

Political strife, new technological advances, and new protections for job applicants can make it difficult to navigate the legal workplace landscape. Holly Sutton, partner at Farella Braun Martel, will unpack important tips to help you navigate political speech in the workplace–the lines can be blurred and tricky to decipher when letting your employees express their thoughts in and out of work–ethical use of AI, drug testing and more. She’ll also give you a rundown on the new laws coming in 2025 and you’ll get a brush up on HR essentials like mealtime keeping.

11:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.Keynote: Ways to Optimize the Recruitment Process to Find the Right Hire
Finding the right cast of players for your business requires consensus on the process, and this session will dive into ways to make the recruitment cycle more efficient, effective, and inclusionary. Attendees will learn ways to bring company, recruiter and hiring manager on board with a common goal, solutions to remove unconscious bias and make the application/interview process more open to all—for example, to those without tech access, with disabilities, language barriers or neurodivergences. Hannah Robinson of Distinguished Vineyard Partners will also reveal ways in which we subconsciously eliminate qualified talent for minor "transgressions” during the interview process, including because of biases around how people dress, where they come from, or how they speak.
